Car Rental Costs in Tunisia

Exactly what you pay — daily rates from €25 with unlimited km, the refundable deposit, insurance and excess, and driver rules. No surprises at the desk.

A real example: one week in an economy car

Here's the full cost of a typical booking — a Kia Picanto or similar for 5 days — with nothing hidden. The refundable deposit is shown separately because it's a hold, not a payment.

Refundable security deposit, by category

The deposit is a temporary hold against damage or fuel — taken at the desk, never when you book, and released in full on return. The exact amount is shown on each car and on your contract; as a guide it scales with the car category:

Economy & compact

  • Lowest deposit hold
  • Held on card or, for some cars, in cash
  • Released in full on return, same condition
  • All-Risk upgrade reduces what the deposit covers

SUV, van & premium

  • Higher deposit hold (higher vehicle value)
  • Credit card recommended for the hold
  • Exact figure shown before you book
  • Release timing depends on your bank (usually days)

Included cover, and how to lower the excess

Every car comes with basic cover as standard. Two optional upgrades reduce the excess (franchise) — the amount you'd be liable for after damage. You pick the level when you book.

Basic (included)

Third-party + collision cover included in every rate. Excess can reach the vehicle value. Best if you want the lowest daily price and accept the risk.

Protection Plus

Caps your excess at up to €1,100 for a small daily amount — a middle ground that limits your liability without the full all-risk price.

All-Risk (zero excess)

Removes the excess entirely — no franchise, no liability for damage. The most peace of mind on unfamiliar roads; priced per day, shown before you confirm.

Cost, deposit & insurance questions

How much does it cost to rent a car in Tunisia?
Economy cars start at €25 per day, and that daily rate already includes unlimited kilometres and basic cover — there is no per-kilometre charge and no online booking fee. A typical week in a small car (Kia Picanto or similar) therefore comes to around €175 before any optional extras. Larger cars, SUVs and automatics cost more per day because they are scarcer locally. The two variables that change your total are how many days you rent and whether you add an insurance upgrade to lower the excess. Everything is shown per car before you book, and because there is no prepayment you only pay when you collect the vehicle at the airport.
How much is the security deposit and when is it returned?
A refundable security deposit is held at pickup, not when you book. The amount depends on the car category — smaller economy cars carry a lower hold, SUVs and premium cars a higher one — and the exact figure is shown on each car and written on the contract you sign, so there are no surprises. The deposit is a hold, not a payment: it is placed on your card (or taken in cash for some categories) and released in full when you return the car in the same condition with the agreed fuel level. Card releases typically clear within a few days depending on your bank. Choosing the all-risk insurance upgrade reduces or removes the excess that the deposit covers.
What insurance is included and what is the excess (franchise)?
Every rental includes basic third-party and collision cover as standard — you are never driving uninsured. What changes between tiers is the excess, the amount you would be liable for in the event of damage. With the included basic cover the excess can reach the value of the vehicle. The Protection Plus upgrade lowers the excess to a capped amount (up to €1,100), and the All-Risk upgrade removes the excess entirely — zero franchise, so you are not liable for damage. You choose the level when you book, priced per day and shown clearly before you confirm. For most tourists the all-risk option buys genuine peace of mind on unfamiliar roads for a small daily amount.
Are there any hidden fees at pickup?
No. The price you see is the price you pay: the daily rate includes unlimited kilometres and basic cover, there is no online booking fee, and there is no charge for meeting you at arrivals. The only additional amounts are ones you actively choose — an optional insurance upgrade, a child seat, an additional driver or a full-tank fuel option — and each is shown before you confirm. Fuel runs on a simple full-to-full policy: you receive the car with a full tank and return it full, with no fuel charge. The refundable deposit is held separately and returned. If any figure on your contract does not match what you booked, tell the agent before you sign.
What is the minimum age and which licence do I need?
The main driver generally needs to be at least 21 years old and to have held a valid driving licence for at least one year. Younger drivers can sometimes be accommodated on smaller categories — ask us on WhatsApp before booking. You will need your driving licence, your passport or national ID, and a card for the deposit hold. Licences from most European and North American countries are accepted directly; if your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, an International Driving Permit alongside it is recommended and avoids any doubt at the desk. For full rules on driving with a foreign licence, see our driving-in-Tunisia guidance, and bring the physical licence, not a photo.
Do prices change between high and low season?
Yes, like everywhere. Demand peaks in July and August — the diaspora summer and the European holiday season — and again around major holidays, when the local fleet is at its tightest and rates are highest. Spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper, and automatics in particular are much easier to secure outside summer. The single biggest saving is not a discount code but booking early: the diaspora books its summer cars from April, and the cheapest cars and all automatics go first. Because reserving is free and requires no prepayment, booking early costs you nothing and simply locks in the car and the rate before they are gone.
